The fifth season of The Crown, which follows the life and reign of Queen Elizabeth II, was released by Netflix on 9 November 2022. It was the first season of the series to be released following both the death of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh on 9 April 2021 and the death of Queen Elizabeth II on 8 September 2022.

Imelda Staunton stars as Elizabeth, along with main cast members Jonathan Pryce, Lesley Manville, Jonny Lee Miller, Dominic West and Elizabeth Debicki. 411"Queen Victoria Syndrome"Jessica HobbsPeter Morgan9 November 2022 (2022-11-09)
In 1953, the Queen launches the royal yacht HMY Britannia. In 1991, the Queen and Prince Philip embark on a voyage aboard Britannia around British waters, while Charles and Diana take a trip to Italy that is branded as their second honeymoon. Diana is annoyed that Charles invited his cousin Norton Knatchbull and his family. Phillip notices that Britannia is past her prime and needs expensive repairs. The Sunday Times runs a story that the British public favours an abdication, citing that the Queen has "Queen Victoria Syndrome" and has been on the throne too long. Much to Diana's dismay, Charles and Diana's trip is cut short. Charles has a meeting with Prime Minister John Major about the article. The Queen becomes aware of the story before meeting Major at Balmoral Castle. She asks the government to cover the repair costs for Britannia, but Major is reluctant to use public money on perceived luxuries of the royal family. The Queen presses Major, who relents. Major attends the Ghillies Ball, where senior family members confide their troubles in him. Major expresses his concern to his wife Norma that the royal family is falling apart.
422"The System"Jessica HobbsPeter Morgan9 November 2022 (2022-11-09)
Prince Philip takes up carriage driving as a sport. To help his godson's wife, Lady Romsey, cope with the death of a child, Philip introduces her to the sport. Diana's radiologist friend, James Colthurst, is approached by Andrew Morton, who plans to write a book about her marriage. To prevent direct contact between Diana and Morton, Colthurst is given questions by Morton to deliver to Diana, then ferries her answers to Morton. Philip hears rumours from Lady Romsey that a book is being written about Diana with her cooperation. Colthurst is knocked off his bicycle by a van, and Morton's house is broken into. Philip visits Diana, warning her against undermining the system. Morton's book is published, causing tensions between Diana and the royal family.
433"Mou Mou"Alex GabassiPeter Morgan9 November 2022 (2022-11-09)
In 1946, Mohamed Al-Fayed, a street vendor in Alexandria, Egypt, has a short encounter with the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. Mohamed marries and has a son, Dodi Fayed. In 1979, Mohamed, now a rich businessman, purchases the Hôtel Ritz Paris. At a reception celebrating the acquisition, Mohamed has Dodi dismiss a black waiter named Sydney Johnson. However, upon hearing that Johnson was the valet to the Duke of Windsor, he hires Johnson to be his valet to teach him British customs and manners and help him get close to the British royal family. Mohamed purchases Harrods department store, and Dodi, with Mohamed's help, finances the film Chariots of Fire. After the Duchess's death in 1986, Mohamed leases the Windsors' Parisian villa and, with Johnson's supervision, restores it and renames it Villa Windsor. Mohamed invites the Queen to visit the villa; instead, she sends her private secretary to take possession of some of the Windsors' property for the Royal Collection. Johnson dies soon after. At the Royal Windsor Horse Show, Mohamed is again rebuffed by the Queen, who instead sends Diana to take her place. Mohamed introduces Diana to Dodi.
444"Annus Horribilis"May el-ToukhyPeter Morgan9 November 2022 (2022-11-09)
In 1992, after more than 35 years of no contact, Princess Margaret receives a letter from Peter Townsend, informing her that he will be visiting London to attend a veterans' reception. Margaret attends and spends the evening in Townsend's company. Townsend tells her he intends to give her back the letters she had written him during their time together for safekeeping as he does not have long to live. The Queen's children continue to have marital difficulties: Prince Andrew separates from Sarah, Duchess of York after compromising photos of her were published in newspapers, Princess Anne announces her intention to marry Timothy Laurence after her divorce from Mark Phillips, and Prince Charles again brings up a divorce with Diana to the Queen after the publication of Morton's book. A large fire breaks out at Windsor Castle. Margaret confronts the Queen, still furious that she forbade marriage with Townsend, when Anne, in identical circumstances, is allowed to marry Laurence. At a luncheon to mark her Ruby Jubilee, the Queen delivers a speech in which she describes 1992 as an "annus horribilis".
455"The Way Ahead"May el-ToukhyPeter Morgan9 November 2022 (2022-11-09)
Prince Charles and Diana formally separate. A tabloid newspaper publishes transcripts of an intimate telephone conversation between Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles three years before. An informal group of advisors starts meeting regularly to suggest ways to improve the monarchy's image but, effectively chaired by Prince Philip, only minor measures are discussed. To improve his public image after 'Tampongate,' Charles appears in the documentary Charles: The Private Man, the Public Role with Jonathan Dimbleby. Diana and Camilla face increased press attention; Diana attends an event wearing the "revenge dress." Princess Anne reports to the senior royals that far from letting the scandal break him, Charles is emerging stronger and, to the Queen's surprise, is setting up a circle of advisors to work on his progressive agenda, to counter the "way ahead" group (which he calls the "lagging behind" group). Charles continues his work with The Prince's Trust to help disadvantaged youth across the country.
466"Ipatiev House"Christian SchwochowPeter Morgan9 November 2022 (2022-11-09)
In 1917, King George V and Queen Mary are asked by the British government to support the dispatch of a warship to Russia to take the Romanov family—Tsar Nicholas II, Tsarina Alexandra, their four daughters and their son Tsarevich Alexei—to the United Kingdom. At Ipatiev House in Yekaterinburg, the Romanovs are executed by local Bolsheviks. In the present day, the Queen receives Russian president Boris Yeltsin at Buckingham Palace. Yeltsin invites the Queen for a state visit to Russia. The Queen, pointing out that Yeltsin carried out the order to demolish Ipatiev House, makes it a condition for the remains of the Romanovs to be exhumed and reburied. Yeltsin agrees, and Prince Philip helps identify the remains through DNA profiling by providing his samples. On the state visit to Russia, Philip admits to the Queen that he sought intellectual companionship elsewhere, the closest friend being Lady Romsey. The Queen invites Lady Romsey to make a public appearance alongside the royal family to dispel rumours of impropriety.
477"No Woman's Land"Erik Richter StrandPeter Morgan9 November 2022 (2022-11-09)
Prince William begins attending Eton College. Diana struggles with her separation and the changing relationship with her son. Martin Bashir, a journalist for the BBC's current affairs programme Panorama, uses forged bank statements to gain the confidence of Earl Spencer, Diana's brother. Bashir claims that Charles and Diana's staff are spying for the security services. Diana meets the surgeon Hasnat Khan. William confides to the Queen that he sometimes worries about his mother. Diana hangs around the hospital until she has another encounter with Khan. Earl Spencer introduces Diana to Bashir; Bashir persuades Diana to film an interview with Panorama to tell her version of the story in response to Charles's documentary. Diana and Khan see a film together, then share a kiss. Bashir encourages Diana's feelings of insecurity.
488"Gunpowder"Erik Richter StrandPeter Morgan9 November 2022 (2022-11-09)
Diana and Khan continue their relationship. Bashir and his editor Steve Hewlett is given the go-ahead by BBC director-general John Birt to conduct the interview. Earl Spencer notes inconsistencies in Bashir's accounts and advises Diana to cease contact, but Bashir persuades Diana to continue. Bashir and his team film "An Interview with HRH The Princess of Wales" under secrecy in Diana's apartment at Kensington Palace on Guy Fawkes Night. Reviewing the footage, Birt is stunned by the explosive content and has misgivings letting it go to air, but ultimately does not terminate it. Diana informs the Queen of the interview in advance of its broadcast date, which the Queen notes is her and Prince Philip's 48th wedding anniversary.
499"Couple 31"Christian SchwochowPeter Morgan9 November 2022 (2022-11-09)
The Queen writes to Charles and Diana advising them to divorce. Diana deals with the fallout of the Panorama interview and the end of her relationship with Khan. With Charles and Diana unable to agree on settlement terms for their divorce, the Queen asks John Major to act as an intermediary. Charles engages the services of public relations executive Mark Bolland, who advises Charles to agree to terms so that Charles and Camilla can improve their public image as soon as possible. Charles and Diana agree on a settlement. Charles visits Diana at her apartment, where the two reflect on their marriage.
5010"Decommissioned"Alex GabassiPeter Morgan9 November 2022 (2022-11-09)
The Labour Party led by Tony Blair win the 1997 United Kingdom general election in a landslide. With Blair making it clear that he will not fund a new yacht with taxpayers' money, and his proposal for private financing rejected by the Queen, she decides to retire Britannia with no replacement. Diana and her sons are invited by Mohamed Al-Fayed to a holiday in Saint-Tropez. Charles travels to Hong Kong to give a speech marking the handover of Hong Kong. After the handover ceremony, he meets Blair on Britannia to discuss modernising the monarchy. Before the decommissioning of Britannia, the Queen returns to the yacht for a private farewell.

Production

Casting

In January 2020, Imelda Staunton was announced as succeeding Colman as the Queen in the fifth season, and her role in the final sixth season was reported in July.[24][25] Also in July 2020, Lesley Manville was announced as portraying Princess Margaret,[26][25] and the following month, Jonathan Pryce and Elizabeth Debicki had been cast as Prince Philip and Diana, Princess of Wales, respectively.[27][28] In October 2020, Dominic West was in talks to play Prince Charles and was officially confirmed as part of the cast in April 2021.[29][30] In June 2021, Jonny Lee Miller was cast as John Major and Olivia Williams announced that she would portray Camilla Parker Bowles.[31][32] On 18 November 2021, it was announced Senan West, the real-life son of Dominic, was cast as Prince William.[33] In March 2022, Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu was cast as Monique Ritz.[23]

Filming

Filming for the season began in July 2021.[34] Jemima Khan, who was a friend of Princess Diana, revealed that she had stepped down as a consultant and co-writer on episodes focusing on the Princess over concerns that the story of her final years would not be as properly portrayed as she expected.[35] Filming was temporarily halted that December after eight crew members tested positive for COVID-19, which resulted in them being quarantined.[36]

Music

While not on the soundtrack, "Emotions" by American singer Mariah Carey was featured in the first episode of the season.[37]

Release

The fifth season was released on 9 November 2022.[38]

Reception

Critical response

Rotten Tomatoes reported a 72% approval rating for the fifth season based on 96 reviews, with an average rating of 6.75/10. Its critical consensus reads: "In its fifth season, it's hard to shake the feeling that this series has lost some of its luster -- but addictive drama and a sterling cast remain The Crown's jewels."[39] On Metacritic, the season holds a score of 65 out of 100 based on 37 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[40]

Controversy

After the fourth season, there were increased calls for Netflix to add a disclaimer to The Crown to emphasize that the series was a fictionalized portrayal based on historical events. Calls for a disclaimer grew prior to the release of the fifth season, given that it would be released only two months after the Queen's death. Notably, veteran actress Judi Dench penned an open letter to The Times, deeming the series "crude sensationalism" and calling for a disclaimer to be added.[41] Netflix updated both the series description and the season 5 trailer caption on YouTube to refer to the series as a "fictional dramatization".[42] However, upon the release of the series, no episode contained a disclaimer.[43]

In response to a scene in which Prince Charles and then-Prime Minister John Major discuss the possibility of the Queen abdicating, Major issued a statement, labelling the scene as "a barrel-load of malicious nonsense," and confirmed he had never discussed the series with Netflix.[44]
