The fifth season of The Crown, which follows the life and reign of Queen Elizabeth II, was released by Netflix on 9 November 2022. It was the first season of the series to be released following both the death of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh on 9 April 2021 and the death of Queen Elizabeth II on 8 September 2022.
Imelda Staunton stars as Elizabeth, along with main cast members Jonathan Pryce, Lesley Manville, Jonny Lee Miller, Dominic West and Elizabeth Debicki. All cast members are new to the series; this season marked The Crown's second and final wholesale recasting, following the ensembles led by Claire Foy (seasons 1 and 2) and Olivia Colman (seasons 3 and 4).

Much to Diana's dismay, Charles and Diana's trip is cut short. Charles has a meeting with Prime Minister John Major about the article. The Queen becomes aware of the story before meeting Major at Balmoral Castle. She asks the government to cover the repair costs for Britannia, but Major is reluctant to use public money on perceived luxuries of the royal family. The Queen presses Major, who relents. Rotten Tomatoes reported a 72% approval rating for the fifth season based on 96 reviews, with an average rating of 6.75/10. Its critical consensus reads: "In its fifth season, it's hard to shake the feeling that this series has lost some of its luster -- but addictive drama and a sterling cast remain The Crown's jewels."[39] On Metacritic, the season holds a score of 65 out of 100 based on 37 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[40]
After the fourth season, there were increased calls for Netflix to add a disclaimer to The Crown to emphasize that the series was a fictionalized portrayal based on historical events. Calls for a disclaimer grew prior to the release of the fifth season, given that it would be released only two months after the Queen's death. Notably, veteran actress Judi Dench penned an open letter to The Times, deeming the series "crude sensationalism" and calling for a disclaimer to be added.[41] Netflix updated both the series description and the season 5 trailer caption on YouTube to refer to the series as a "fictional dramatization".[42] However, upon the release of the series, no episode contained a disclaimer.[43]
In response to a scene in which Prince Charles and then-Prime Minister John Major discuss the possibility of the Queen abdicating, Major issued a statement, labelling the scene as "a barrel-load of malicious nonsense," and confirmed he had never discussed the series with Netflix.[44]
