Singaporean businessman (born 1983)
Shou Zi Chew (Chinese : 周受资; pinyin : Zhōu Shòuzī ; born 1 January 1983) is a Singaporean businessman and entrepreneur who has served as chief executive officer (CEO) of TikTok since 2021.[1] [2] [3]
Early life and education
Chew was born on 1 January 1983 in Singapore .[4] His father worked in construction while his mother was a bookkeeper .[5]
Upon his graduation from Hwa Chong Institution ,[5] Chew went on to serve National Service in which he was a commissioned officer in the Singapore Armed Forces .[5] After his military service, Chew went on to study at University College London ,[6] where he graduated in 2006 with a Bachelor of Economics degree.[7] In 2010, he completed a Master of Business Administration degree at Harvard Business School ,[4] and while there completed a summer internship at Facebook prior to its IPO .[8]
Career
After graduating from University College London in 2006, Chew worked at Goldman Sachs in London for two years as a banker before he joined venture capital firm DST Global .[5] At DST Global, Chew led a team of early investors in ByteDance in 2013.[5]
In 2015, Chew joined smartphone giant Xiaomi as its chief financial officer .[5] In 2019, he became Xiaomi’s international business president.[5]
In March 2021, Chew joined ByteDance as its chief financial officer.[9] [10] He subsequently replaced TikTok CEO Kevin A. Mayer ,[11] who left the ByteDance subsidiary after three months on the job.[12]
In March 2023, Chew testified before the US Congress regarding the legislative effort to ban TikTok in the United States.[13]
Personal life
Chew is Singaporean . He is married to Vivian Kao, an American of Taiwanese descent . They had met in 2008 while studying at Harvard Business School.[5] The couple have two children,[5] and live in Singapore.[14]
Chew likes to play golf and read books on theoretical physics in his spare time.[15]
