KSI vs Swarmz and KSI vs Luis Alcaraz Pineda, billed as MF & DAZN: X Series 001 and 2 Fights 1 Night, were a pair of professional crossover boxing bouts contested between British YouTuber KSI as he faced both British rapper Swarmz and Mexican boxer Luis Alcaraz Pineda on the same night. Both bouts took place on 27 August 2022 at The O2 Arena in London, England.[3][4][5] KSI was originally scheduled to face Alex Wassabi, however due to a concussion, Wassabi was forced to pull out of the fight.[6] KSI was also originally scheduled to face Ivan Nikolov as his second opponent after Swarmz, however, due to allegations towards Nikolov, suggesting he is both a white supremacist and a Neo-Nazi, he was forced to pull out of the fight.[7]

Background

On 4 May 2022, KSI announced on Twitter that he would soon return to boxing against an unnamed opponent. The return would mark nearly three years since KSI defeated Logan Paul via split-decision in their 2019 rematch fight.[8] On 1 July, it was announced that KSI was scheduled to face Alex Wassabi, who had previously defeated his brother Deji. The fight was confirmed to be taking place on 27 August 2022 at The O2 Arena in London, England.[3]

On 6 August, Wassabi pulled out from the fight due to a concussion he received while training.[9][10] A replacement fighter, Swarmz, had already been contracted in the event of Wassabi pulling out, and was announced as KSI's opponent the same day.[4][11] Due to backlash from social media about KSI’s opponent Swarmz, on 16 August it was announced that KSI will be facing a second opponent thus billing the event "2 Fights 1 Night." On 20 August it was announced that Luis Alcaraz Pineda would be KSI's second opponent. Ivan Nikolov, a Bulgarian professional boxer, was previously announced as KSI's second opponent before Luis, but was pulled from the fight after it was revealed that he had a "white power" tattoo on his stomach, among other tattoos on his body referencing Neo-Nazi groups and symbols.[7] Along with the tattoos, many pictures of Nikolov surrounded by many swastika suggesting that he is a part of the Neo-Nazism movement.[12]

The fight was exclusively available through DAZN PPV in the US, UK, Canada, and Ireland, while internationally the fight was streamed on DAZN. KSI's promotional company 'Misfits Boxing' and DAZN had signed a multi event deal that saw multiple celebrity boxing matches under the title "MF & DAZN: X Series" with KSI vs Swarmz and KSI vs Pineda being marked as 001.[13]

Card

The card for the fight, consisting of the main event and co-main events was released on 9 July 2022 and consisted of KSI vs Swarmz and Luis Alcaraz Pineda, FaZe Temper vs Slim Albaher, Deji vs Fousey.[14][4] The undercard for the fight was released on 15 July, six days later, and announced the fights of FaZe Sensei vs King Kenny, Sam Hyde vs IAmThmpsn, Salt Papi vs Andy Warski, and DeenTheGreat vs Evil Hero. The official Influencer Championship Boxing (ICB) will be on the line for the first time during this event, including KSI vs Swarmz for the cruiserweight title.

Face off

On 29 July 2022, KSI and Wassabi (before being replaced by Swarmz[4]) exchanged words in a virtual face-off hosted by YouTube commentator Wade Plemons. During the face-off, KSI explained he was only fighting Wassabi as a "warmup" for an inevitable fight against his long-term rival Jake Paul, and that he had to show Paul that he is the "A-side". KSI then explained that a victory over Wassabi would give him greater negotiating power with Paul over various logistical aspects of their contract agreement, such as the location and weight limits of a future fight.[15]

Broadcasting
