Aitana Ocaña Morales (born 27 June 1999), known mononymously as Aitana, is a Spanish singer. She first gained national recognition in 2017, placing as the runner-up in series nine of the Spanish reality television talent competition Operación Triunfo. While competing on the show, Aitana recorded the single "Lo Malo" with fellow companion Ana Guerra as part of the songs in the running to represent Spain in the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest. The song became an instant hit in Spain, debuting at number-one and holding the spot for several weeks. Following the competition, Aitana expanded her pre-contract with Universal Music and released her debut solo single "Teléfono" to commercial success and streaming-breaking records.[1]

The singer later issued an extended play, Tráiler, in November 2018, which topped the charts in her home country once again.[2] Her debut studio album, Spoiler, was released in June 2019 and received a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Pop Vocal Album. Its accompanying concert tour visited many indoor arenas in Spain and was taped for the video album Play Tour: En Directo. Aitana later collaborated with international acts such as Morat, David Bisbal and Katy Perry.[3] In late 2020 she released her sophomore album 11 Razones. It spawned the top five singles "+" featuring Cali y El Dandee and "Corazón Sin Vida" featuring Sebastián Yatra.[4]

Throughout her career, Aitana has won two Premios Odeón, four Los40 Music Awards, a Radio Disney Music Award and a Kids' Choice Award, among many others.[5][6] She has also been nominated for two Latin Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist, and an MTV Europe Music Award.[7][8]

Early life

Aitana Ocaña Morales was born in Barcelona on June 27, 1999 to Cosme Ocaña and Belén Morales as their only child.[9] She grew up in the municipality of Sant Climent de Llobregat.[10] In 2014, Aitana began to share cover versions of popular songs on YouTube.[11] That year, she released her first original songs.[12]

In 2017, she completed bachillerato and was admitted to study Design in university the following year. After taking selectividad, she visited Ciudad Universitaria in Madrid, where the auditions for Operación Triunfo were being held. After auditioning, she was picked into series nine of the competition.[13]

Career

2017–2018: Operación Triunfo and first releases

In October 2017, Aitana entered musical reality show contest Operación Triunfo.[14] After over three months it ended with her as the show's runner-up.[15] During her participation in the contest, she competed to represent Spain in the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 with two songs: "Arde", which she performed solo, and "Lo malo", composed by Brisa Fenoy and performed as a duet with Ana Guerra.[16] The former song ended in second place and the latter finished third in the selection.[17] Even though "Lo malo" hadn't been selected by the public to represent the country, it became an instant hit in Spain, topping the charts for five non-consecutive weeks and being certified 5x platinum.[18] A remix of the song featuring Greeicy and Tini was released in August 2018.[19] The song was performed at the 2019 Premios Lo Nuestro in Miami.[20]

Aitana embarked on a co-headlining tour with her Operación Triunfo mates from March to December 2018.[21] The tour consisted of 23 dates and was attended by almost 300,000 people. In July, the singer released her first solo single "Teléfono" which received mixed reviews. The song became her first number-one solo song in Spain. It topped the charts for six consecutive weeks and was certified 4x platinum.[22] Its music video became the most watched video on its first twenty-four hours on YouTube's Vevo channel in Spain.[23] "Teléfono" was included in her debut extended play, Tráiler, which she released on November 30, 2018.[24] The EP features six original songs, of which one is a collaboration with the Venezuelan-American singer Lele Pons.[25] A week after, "Vas a Quedarte" was released as the EP's second single.[26] Written alongside Colombian band Morat, it became her third number-one hit in Spain and was nominated for "Song of the Year" at the 2019 LOS40 Music Awards. She also released an illustrated book which she named La Tinta de Mis Ojos, became an ambassador for Stradivarius, took part of a Coca-Cola Christmas campaign, did a cameo in Skam España and presented Bad Bunny alongside Pons at the 19th Annual Latin Grammy Awards.[27][28][29]

2019: Breakthrough with

Aitana began teasing her debut studio album in March 2019 which was intended to be a new EP that would be the second of a trilogy.[30] That same month, the singer announced that she would be embarking on an intimate promotional concert tour the month after produced by Los40.[31] At the tour's first stop, in Barcelona, the singer revealed that she had changed her mind a little bit. Now, she wasn't scheduled to release another 6-track EP but a full album. She announced the album's name, Spoiler and hinted the release date of the album; she said that it would be released by the beginning of summer.[32] In April 2019 she collaborated with Morat in "Presiento". In May she collaborated with former One Direction member Zayn in the revamped version of "A Whole New World" for the live action film of Disney's Aladdin.[33] On May 17, 2019, she released "Nada Sale Mal", the lead single of her upcoming debut studio album.[34] It peaked at number 4 on the Spanish charts and has been certified Gold. The album was released digitally and physically on June 7, 2019. It debuted at the top of the charts, was certified Gold in its first week and scored a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Pop Vocal Album at the 2020 gala.[35] Later that month, the collaboration with Lola Indigo "Me Quedo" was released as the album's second single.[36] Thanks to this work, Aitana was nominated for Best New Artist at the 20th Annual Latin Grammy Awards, where she performed "Mi Persona Favorita" alongside Greeicy, Nella and Alejandro Sanz.[37][38]

The singer embarked on her first concert tour, the Play Tour, in support of the album, on June 22, 2019.[39] With it, Aitana has been given the opportunity to sell-out large arenas like Madrid's Palacio Vistalegre, Seville's Auditorio Rocío Jurado or Barcelona's Palau Sant Jordi, with the last one being the country's largest indoor arena.[40] The singer performed 27 shows around Spain from June to December 2019. It has been confirmed that the tour will continue throughout 2020 in Spain and Latin America.[41][42] Thus, in February 2020 she announced the "+ Play Tour", its extension.[43]

Shortly after releasing Spoiler, Aitana announced that the album would be reissued.[44] In early December, the singer announced "Spoiler: Re-Play".[45] Released on December 20, 2019, the reissue includes the album, five acoustic versions of her own songs and a tour documentary that features images of her concerts in Madrid, Barcelona and Granada.[46] It hasn't been released in digital platforms but only in physical stores. Aitana ended 2019 being the third most streamed female artist on Spotify in Spain only being surpassed by flamenco fusion singer Rosalía and Colombian singer Karol G.[47]

2020-present: Collaborations, a new sound, and 11 Razones

On December 18, 2019, Aitana released the lead single of her upcoming second studio album.[48] She anticipated during fall that it would feature an internationally-known artist. Thus on the mentioned day she released "+" featuring Colombian duo Cali Y el Dandee.[49] The song debuted at number 21 on the PROMUSICAE chart with only two days of tracking making it the only song in Spanish music history to reach this position with within this 2 days, later peaking at number 2 and spending 9 weeks in the top 10.[50] On December 28, 2019, it was announced that Aitana would have a cameo role in the third season of the original Spanish Netflix series, Élite.[51] The singer will be back on TV as a judge on the upcoming season of La Voz Kids, which is set to premiere in late 2020.[52]

On 20 January 2020, she won premio Odeón for Best New Artist and in March a Premio Dial for Best Female Artist.[53] In April 2020 she collaborated with Spanish singer and fellow friend David Bisbal on the remixed version of his song "Si Tú la Quieres", which became a top 20 in Spain and is certified Gold.[54] In May, Aitana announced that she would be collaborating with artists like Reik in "Enemigos" or Piso 21 throughout the year as part of a dropplet era, which means that those songs will not be included in her second studio album, which is set to be released in October 2020.[55][56] Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, many shows from the "+ Play Tour" were cancelled or rescheduled in order to accomplish the sanitary restrictions. The tour was scheduled to start in Valencia on May 23. In July, the live album for her debut tour, "Play Tour: En Directo" was released in physical stores. On July 30 a second collaboration with Morat, "Más De Lo Que Aposté" was released on digital platforms and became a top 20 hit in Spain.[57] On September 11 the singer released an upbeat garage rock collaboration with primary school friend Adrián Marmol (artisticaly known as Marmi) titled "Tu Foto del DNI", which was acclaimed by the general public for being "a pleasant change in the singer's sound as well as one of the best vocal collaborations released by someone known for being in OT".[58][59] The second single of her upcoming album, "Corazón Sin Vida" was released on October 2.[60] It features vocals by Colombian pop singer Sebastián Yatra and a sample of Alejandro Sanz's signature song "Corazón Partío". It debuted number 4 on the Spanish charts. On October 30, she was featured on "Friend de Semana" alongside Mexican and Brazilian singers Danna Paola and Luisa Sonza.[61] On November 13, she was featured on a Tiësto remix of Katy Perry's "Resilient".[62] She described this moment as "a dream come true".[63]

In November, Aitana announced that her sophomore studio album would be named 11 Razones. It was released on December 11 and includes eleven tracks including collaborations with Beret and Natalia Lacunza, among others.[64] The album is reminiscent of early 2000s pop-rock, which saw a departure from the sounds she had explored on Spoiler.

Personal life

Following her contract with Universal Music, in October 2018, Aitana left Sant Climent de Llobregat (Catalunya, Spain) and moved alone to an apartment in the Fuente del Berro district in Madrid owned by the Spanish actress Blanca Suárez.[65][66] In 2018, she ended her relationship with childhood boyfriend Vicente Rodríguez and began a romantic relation with Operación Triunfo companion Luis Cepeda, who she kissed in front of a 60,000 audience at a concert at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu in June.[67][68] At that time, Cepeda was 28 and Aitana 18, which caused controversy due to the ten year age gap in which Aitana was still a teenager and Cepeda was a grown man. They broke up in September 2018.[69] Two months later she started dating Élite star Miguel Bernardeau, who is still her partner till this day, almost 2 years later.[70] They moved in together in September 2020, in a 750,000€ worth chalet in Madrid.[71]

She adopted a dog called Sopa (soup in Spanish) when it was 2 months old and she gladly shows it on her social media.

On 3 December 2020, during COVID-19 pandemic in Spain, Aitana tested positive for COVID-19.[72]
