Regé-Jean Page (/ˈrɛɡeɪ ˈʒɒ̃ ˈpeɪdʒ/[1]) is a British actor. He is known for playing Chicken George in the 2016 miniseries Roots,[2] and was a regular cast member on the ABC legal drama For the People from 2018 to 2019. In 2020, Page starred in season one of the Netflix period drama Bridgerton as Simon Basset, Duke of Hastings[3] for which he won the Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series NAACP Image Award.

In February 2021, Page was recognised in Time magazine's 100 Next list under the category of Phenoms with a profile written by Shonda Rhimes.[4]

Early life

Page was born in London[3][5][6] to a Zimbabwean mother who was a nurse and an English father who was a preacher.[7] He is the second youngest of four children and was in a band with his brother.[8] He had spent his childhood in Harare, Zimbabwe before returning to London for secondary school.[9]

After returning to the UK, Page took up acting as a hobby during Saturday school. The National Youth Theatre changed his trajectory. After two years of auditioning, Page was accepted to Drama Centre London.[8]

Career

Page began his career on stage, appearing in The History Boys and The Merchant of Venice opposite Jonathan Pryce.[10] He also starred in the final season of BBC Three drama series Waterloo Road in 2015.

In 2016, Page made his American debut playing the role of Chicken George in the History Channel big budget miniseries Roots, a remake of the 1977 miniseries with the same name, based on Alex Haley's 1976 novel, Roots: The Saga of an American Family. The series and Page's performance received critical acclaim.[11][12][13] Also that year, he was cast as a male lead in the ABC pilot Spark.[14] The following year, he was cast in the Shonda Rhimes-produced legal drama series For the People.[15][16] Page also appeared in the 2018 post-apocalyptic film Mortal Engines and had a supporting role in the 2020 drama film Sylvie's Love.[17] He later was cast in the male leading role in the first season of the Shonda Rhimes-produced period drama series Bridgerton for Netflix.[18][19]

In February 2021, it was announced that Page had been cast in the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons film.[20]

In March 2021, it was announced that Page joined the cast of the upcoming Netflix movie, The Gray Man, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo.[21]
