Albanian business executive (born 1988)
Mira Murati (born 16 December 1988) is an Albanian [1] [2] engineer and business manager who has been serving as chief technology officer of OpenAI since 2018.[3]
She briefly served as interim chief executive officer of OpenAI from 17 to 20 November 2023.[4] [5]
Early life and education
Murati was born on 16 December 1988[6] in Vlorë , Albania .[7] At the age of 16, Murati went to high school at the Pearson United World College of the Pacific on Vancouver Island , British Columbia , Canada , from which she graduated in 2005.[8] [9] For her undergraduate education, Murati attended Colby College and Dartmouth College .[10] [11] [12]
Career
Murati previously worked at electric car company Tesla and augmented reality start-up Leap Motion .[13] [14] She then joined OpenAI in 2018, later becoming its chief technology officer , leading the company's work on ChatGPT, Dall-E , and Codex ,[13] [15] and overseeing the company's research, product and safety teams.[16] On 17 November 2023, Murati took over as interim chief executive officer of OpenAI, following the abrupt removal of Sam Altman .[4] [17] [18] She was replaced by Emmett Shear three days later on 20 November 2023,[19] who was in turn replaced by Altman, who was reinstated five days after being ousted.[20]
