Plot

In Saurashtra, a young Michael's mania for superheroes instigates him to murder his own parents, who oppose his obsession. Years later, Michael, an admired superhero, now christens himself as "Mega Man" and thwarts a burglary attempt and slays the robbers. He recruits the assistance of his friend, Siri Vennela's innovations, but yearns to possess a power that would make him a real and formidable superhero.

Lord Indra's assault on an infant Hanuman to deter his attempts of feeding on the Sun God terminated in the spilling of his divine blood, a drop of which plunged into the sea and eventually progressed into a holy gem. Situated on a sea shore, Anjanadri, a dystopian hamlet, is agonized under the tyranny of the polygar, Gajapathi. Hanumanthu, a petty thief in Anjanadri, has a huge crush on Meenakshi, a doctor and the local school head master's granddaughter. She constantly combats Gajapathi's despotism, prompting him to oppress the rebellion in the village and launch a false bandit attack on Meenakshi; Hanumanthu manages to avert the ambush and rescue Meenakshi, but is severely wounded and thrown into the sea. He discovers the gem and acquires it, while Meenakshi pines to uncover the identity of her savior, who has been aiding her since their childhood but does not expose himself.

Hanumanthu is found unconscious on the shore with serious wounds, but miraculously recuperates due to the gem, surprising his elder sister, Anjamma, and best friend, Kasi. As a result of coming into contact with the gem and owning it, he attains exceptional superpowers. While Hanumanthu's efforts to win over Meenakshi humorously fail, he revels in his newfound superpowers and confides in Kasi. Meenakshi confronts Gajapathi for compelling an aged farmer to attempt suicide and he challengers her to a customary kusthi match. Hanumanthu comes forward to represent Meenakshi against Gajapathi, and defeats him in the match. He is recruited to be the polygar, but disagrees with the villagers and proposes democratic elections to decide the new leader, impressing Meenakshi. Out of nowhere, Michael and Siri arrive at Anjanadri under the pretext of corporate social responsibility and offer to construct a hospital.

It is revealed that Michael had found out about Hanumanthu's newly-acquired superpowers through a social media clip and desires to uncover the root cause of his capabilities. He fabricates a crane collapse to provoke Hanumanthu into using his powers, but fails to discern the reason behind them. Hanumanthu realizes Anjamma's unconditional love for him through Kasi's grandmother and repents hurting her with his conduct; he undertakes the household's responsibility and arranges her wedding. Siri later abducts Hanumanthu for the information pertaining to his powers and threatens him to disclose the details, while Michael uncovers the gem's potential and tries cautioning Siri, but the latter does not pay any heed. Hanumanthu fools Siri and breaks free to rescue Meenakshi from hooligans sent after her by Gajapathi; he professes his feelings to her, reveals that he had been her saviour, and discloses about the gem and his powers.

Hanumanthu breaks into Michael's caravan, while the latter leaves Siri, an asthma patient, to succumb to his asthma attack when he refuses to stand by his hazardous conspiracies to acquire the gem. Michael's men strike Hanumanthu, but an elderly sage, disguising himself as Hanumanthu, pounces on the goons and rescues him. On Anjamma's wedding day, Michael accuses Hanumanthu of robbing him of his money and an ancestral gem; upon Anjamma's instructions, Hanumanthu returns the gem, but it turns out to be made of a magnifying glass that damages Michael's eye and exposes his true colours. As Hanumanthu divulges to the villagers about the gem, Michael instructs his henchmen to kill him, but Anjamma fights for her brother and takes a bullet in the process, killing her. Frustrated with the gem's inability to rescue Anjamma due to the sunset, Hanumanthu throws it away and tearfully cremates her, while Michael releases a toxic smoke through drones into the village to slowly decimate it and obtain the gem. Discovering his plot, Meenakshi rushes to seek Hanumanthu out, but he distrusts himself with the responsibility of rescuing the village.

The elderly sage interrupts their conversation, and discloses himself to be Vibhishana. Vibhishana reveals to Hanumanthu and Meenakshi, that Hanumanthu's powers are exactly of those of Lord Hanuman, and explains his presence in Hanumanthu's life ever since he acquired the gem. With newfound motivation, Hanumanthu decides to obliterate Michael. Siri, who was rescued by Hanumanthu, undergoes a change of heart and persuades Gajapathi and his men to help Hanumanthu for Anjanadri and tries deactivating the drones. Hanumanthu, Gajapathi, and the latter's men battle Michael and his henchmen. A monkey calling himself as "Koti", assists Hanumanthu by getting him the gem, who then manages to destroy the drones, desisting the release of smoke. However, Michael obtains the gem through his new "Mega Man" suit, but cannot stop Hanumanthu with his power. He finally attempts to destroy Anjanadri from his helicopter; Hanumanthu resists him and explodes the helicopter, killing Michael and destroying the gem for good, however, the blood drop inculcates itself permanently into Hanumanthu.

While Vibhishana anticipates a tremendous battle with the Asuras, Lord Hanuman emerges out of a cave in the Himalayas and appears before Hanumanthu. Vibhishana recounts a promise made by Lord Hanuman to Lord Rama and declares that the time for him to stand by his oath has finally come, paving way to the sequel, Jai HanuMan.

Development

After successfully directing Zombie Reddy (2021), Varma announced his fourth film on 29 May 2021, coinciding with his birthday.[13][14] It was announced that the film will be the first superhero film in Telugu cinema.[15][16] In an interview with Deccan Chronicle said that "the film is inspired by the Hindu God Hanuman", adding "As for the title of the film, Prasanth says he chose it because it was a dedication to many who, when they think of any superpower or a superhero in Hinduism, we remember Lord Hanuman. In the film, the name of the protagonist is Hanu-Man", regarding the title of the film.[17]

The film was funded by the American NRI film distributor, Kandagatla Niranjan Reddy, under Primeshow Entertainment.[18] It was made on a shoe-string budget of 20 crores.[19] During the teaser launch event held in Hyderabad in November 2022, Varma revealed that the production budget increased six times from the initial valuation.[20] HanuMan is the first installment of the Prasanth Varma Cinematic Universe (PVCU).[21]

Pre-production

The story of HanuMan came from Varma and was then developed by his team at Scriptsville, a writing team he co-founded with his sister, Sneha Sameera.[22] In an interview, Varma said that his education in a gurukul helped him with the film's research.[23] Varma also sought S. S. Rajamouli's advice while making the film.[24]

Anudeep Dev, GowraHari, and Krishna Saurabh were hired to compose the music for the film.[25] GowraHari composed the background score for the film.[26] Sai Babu Tallari was hired for the editing, reuniting with Varma after Zombie Reddy.[27] The other technicians includes cinematographer Dasaradhi Sivendra, production designer Nagendra Tangala, costume designer Lanka Santhoshi.[28][29] Asrin Reddy is the executive producer, Venkat Kumar Jetty is the line producer and Kushal Reddy and Pushpak Reddy are the associate producers of the film.[30]

Prior to starting the first shooting schedule, the team had constructed a studio at leased land at Vattinagulapally located in Telangana, for filming green screen shots.[22]

Casting

Teja Sajja played the titular character Hanumanthu, a superhero, and sported long hair and bearded look.[31] This marked Tejja's third collaboration with Varma after their Zombie Reddy and Adbhutham (2021).[32] Amritha Aiyer was cast as the film's lead actress, and her character name Meenakshi was revealed in December 2021.[33] Varalaxmi Sarathkumar was roped in a pivotal role, and her inclusion was confirmed on 4 March 2022, on Eve of her birthday.[34] Tamil actor Vinay Rai was announced as the film's antagonist in June 2022.[35]

The film also features Vennela Kishore, Satya, Samuthirakani, Getup Srinu, Raj Deepak Shetty, Koushik Mahata and Bhanu Prakash in pivotal roles.[36] Ravi Teja gave his voice to the monkey character Koti.[37] The name of the fictional village was announced as Anjanadri.[38]

Filming

The film was officially launched on 25 June 2021 in Hyderabad, with a pooja ceremony and muhurtam shot done.[39] Principal photography of the film was also done on the same day.[40] As of August 2021, 40% of filming was completed. Filming of a few action sequences and songs took place at Maredumilli and Paderu in Andhra Pradesh in September 2021.[41][42] Around 60% of filming was completed by December 2021.[43]

The team constructed a temporary studio called Hanuman Studio at Vattinagulapally, where most of the green screen shots portions were filmed.-For wide angle visuals, the team moved to Paderu and Maredumilli in Andhra Pradesh.[22] The underwater sequence was filmed in December 2022.[44]

The climax sequence were filmed for five days.[45] Principal photography wrapped by 17 April 2023, with filming having lasted 130 working days.[46]

Post-production

The dubbing process began during April 2022, with Teja Sajja dubbing his portions.[47] HaloHues Studios, Hyderabad was the film's principal visual effects studio.[48] Extensive work on the visual effects took place for more than a year during the post-production process.[49] It took nearly six months for the visual effects shots of Lord Hanuman.[45] The final edit had around 1600 visual effects shots, which constituted approximately 30% of the film.[22] In an interview, Prasanth Varma discussed the utilisation of pre-visualization, matte painting, 3D, and AI art in the film.[22] Reportedly, the use of ChatGPT and Midjourney eased the burden on the team.[50]

The final copy of the film was ready by December 2023, and was submitted to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) that month. On 29 December 2023, the film received a U/A certificate from the Censor Board, with a finalised runtime of 158 minutes.[51]
