Extraction 2 is a 2023 American action thriller film directed by Sam Hargrave and written by Joe Russo, based on the graphic novel Ciudad by Ande Parks, Joe Russo, Anthony Russo, Fernando León González, and Eric Skillman. It is a sequel to the 2020 film Extraction, and Chris Hemsworth, Golshifteh Farahani and Adam Bessa reprise their roles, with Olga Kurylenko, Daniel Bernhardt, Tinatin Dalakishvili and Idris Elba joining the cast.
Extraction 2 was released by Netflix on 16 June 2023 and received positive reviews from critics with many deeming it superior to its predecessor.
After barely surviving his previous mission in Dhaka, Bangladesh, Tyler Rake retires from mercenary work to a cabin in Austria. There, he is approached by a stranger and asked to rescue his ex-wife Mia's sister Ketevan and her two children Sandro and Nina. Ketevan married Davit Radiani, one of the co-founders of the largest criminal syndicate in Georgia. After Davit threw a DEA agent off the bridge, he is imprisoned and unable to bribe his way out due to the pressure from the Americans. Ketevan and her children were forced to move in to the prison by Davit who wants to be close to his family but the bad living conditions and Davit's abuse cause Ketevan to call Mia for help. Meanwhile, Zurab, Davit's brother, is informed by a governor on his payroll that his brother's sentence is extended to ten years. Zurab asks the Governor to release his brother but the governor refuses since he does not want the Americans to go after him. Enraged, Zurab kills the governor and his men. Tyler recruits Nik and Yaz to join him and they infiltrate the prison. Davit alerts the prisoners, who start a riot. During the extraction, Davit attacks Tyler and Ketevan, resulting in Tyler having to kill him.
Tyler and Ketevan are forced to fight their way through the riot but manage to escape to their safe house in Vienna. However, Sandro, who idolizes his father, secretly contacts his uncle and reveals their location. Zurab and his men track down Tyler and the team to the safe house. Ketevan scolds her son for endangering his own family and naiveness. In the chaos, Sandro abandons his mother and joins Zurab. The team takes one of Zurab's helicopters to escape, but Yaz is killed by Zurab. The team retreat to Tyler's cabin, where he and Ketevan are reunited with Mia.
Tyler apologizes to Mia for leaving on a mission before their son died from cancer. Meanwhile, Avtandil, Zurab's right-hand man and uncle, encourages Zurab to abandon his revenge due to staggering loss of their men and set a better example for his nephew. Enraged, Zurab kills Avtandil and contacts Tyler, telling him to meet at the nearby airfield. Tyler finds Zurab and Sandro in the church, with Sandro wearing an explosive vest. Zurab forces Sandro to take Tyler's pistol, but Sandro, having realized his mistake and what kind of people his father and uncle really are, refuses to shoot Tyler. Tyler fights and kills Zurab, but Nik is left wounded as police swarm the church.
In the aftermath, Nik and Tyler are imprisoned and Mia informs Tyler that Ketevan and her children have been moved to protective custody, but their assets have been frozen. Tyler tells her to give them $1 Million cash which he had hidden under the third floorboard back in the fireplace in his cabin. She tells Tyler that their son died with good memories of him, and bids Tyler farewell for good. Tyler is transported out of prison to meet with the stranger from the beginning, who came with another job. Tyler won't accept without Nik, only to find that the stranger has already brought Nik along, knowing Tyler wouldn't go without her.
Additionally, director Sam Hargrave has a cameo appearance as a gravedigger.
In May 2020, it was reported Joe Russo had been hired to write a sequel to the film, with the intention of both Sam Hargrave and Chris Hemsworth returning.[5][6] In December 2020, the Russo Brothers stated that beyond the sequel they hope to develop a series of films set within the world of Extraction to not only explore some of the characters that were introduced in the first film but to potentially launch a cinematic universe. In January 2021, it was rumored that the Russo brothers were also working on an origin story for Randeep Hooda's character Saju.[7]
Filming for the sequel was slated to begin in Sydney, Australia in September 2021, but measures related to the COVID-19 pandemic moved production to Prague.[8] On November 29, 2021, Hargrave announced that principal photography had begun in Prague, Czech Republic,[9] before Hemsworth announced that he began filming his scenes on December 4.[10] Further shooting began in Vienna, Austria on January 28, 2022, and lasted until February 14, 2022. Scenes were shot at Donau City in the vicinity of the DC Towers.[11] Filming officially wrapped on April 6, 2022.[12] The film was shot on the ARRI ALEXA Mini LF cameras by implementing the same long-take strategies from the first film.[13] Reshoots for the film took place in Prague in November 2022.[14]
Extraction 2 was released by Netflix on June 16, 2023.[15]
On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 78% of 114 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 6.6/10. The website's consensus reads: "Bigger, bolder, and in some respects even better than its predecessor, Extraction 2 is an over-the-top action thriller done right."[16] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 57 out of 100, based on 29 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[17]
Rating 4 stars out of 5, Helen O'Hara of Empire wrote in favour of the movie "A couple of extended action sequences threaten to get too much, but Hargrave just about pulls it back, and adds a couple of witty touches, once again employing a rake as a deadly weapon and putting in what’s surely a deliberate nod to Thor for a giggle."[18] The Indian Express wrote "Extraction 2's relatively restrained final showdown can’t help but feel a little anticlimactic."[19] Critic Matt Donato of IGN opined "Some of that is lost in the annoyingly shaky camera and a few effects shots are questionable, but thankfully, the important things are done right."[20] Gopinath Rajendran of The Hindu opined "But for everything Extraction 2 lacks, the awesome action set-pieces that are unique to the franchise almost make up for it. Loved the 12-minute single-shot action scene in the first film? The sequel features a 21-minute scene of the same ilk."[21] Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian rated the movie 1 star out of 5 and stated "The first Extraction was entertaining enough but this new one is just cynically about extracting the cash."[22]
In June 2023, at the Netflix Tudum festival for the year, it was announced that Extraction 3 is in development. Stated that the company identifies Extraction as a franchise, the official logo was revealed. Chris Hemsworth will reprise his role as Tyler Rake, with Sam Hargrave once again serving as director.[23][24][25]
