Bhajan Lal Sharma (born 15 December 1967)[4] is an Indian politician currently serving as the 14th Chief Minister of Rajasthan since December 2023.[5][6] He is a member of the 16th Rajasthan Legislative Assembly, representing the Sanganer constituency.[7][8]

Early life

Sharma was born in Atari village of Bharatpur’s Nadbai.[9] He was born to Kishan Swaroop Sharma and Gomati Devi.[10] According to the educational qualification mentioned in his election affidavit, he has an MA in political science from the University of Rajasthan.[3]

Political career

Sharma started his political career with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh since his school days through its student wing the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad. He later went on to become the district co-convener and Co-Zila Pramukh there. He later on went on to join the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha and become a sarpanch of his native village at the age of 27.[3]

He has been serving as the General Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Rajasthan for the fourth consecutive term.[11]

Sharma unsuccessfully contested in the 2003 Assembly election from the Nadbai Assembly constituency in Bharatpur on the Rajasthan Samajik Nyay Manch (RSNM)'s ticket and finished fifth, getting just over 5,900 votes and with 6.28% vote share he lost his deposit.[12][13]

Following the 2023 Rajasthan Legislative Assembly election, he was elected as an MLA from the Sanganer Assembly constituency.[14]

On 12 December 2023, a first-time MLA, he was appointed as the 14th Chief Minister of Rajasthan by the Bharatiya Janata Party along with two deputy CMs, Diya Kumari and Prem Chand Bairwa.[15]

He was sworn in as Rajasthan's new CM along with two deputy CMs Diya Kumari and Dr. Prem Chand Bairwa on 15 Dec 2023.[18]

Personal Life

He is currently married and has two sons. His elder son, Abhishek Sharma is studying and has a private job. His younger son, Kunal Sharma is a doctor after studying MBBS.[2]
